Princess Diana’s Wedding Dress Designer

The Princess Diana’s wedding dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who described it as a dress that “had to be something that was going to go down in history, but also something that Diana loved”, and which would be “suitably dramatic in order to make an impression”. Diana Spencer personally selected the designers to make her wedding dress because she was fond of a chiffon blouse they designed for her formal photo session with Lord Snowdon.

The wedding was beamed around the world and there were lots of women who thought the wedding dress was divine. It is true it was a reflection of the 1980s at a time when there were many genres and subcultures emerging. I believe the wedding dress reflected the time frame it was made in.

By the time the wedding day arrived, Lady Diana Spencer had dropped from a size 14 to a size 10 and perhaps that is why the wedding dress looked as though she didn’t fit it. There was a second gown made but it was never used.

It was rumored that when Lady Diana Spencer contacted the designers to make her gown, she is said that she wanted something that would one day be on show in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

There is much to admire about the gown. It was made out of English silk taffeta woven in the UK. It was embellished with thousands of pearls. It was designed to have the longest train of any bridal gown. The Emanuels consulted the designer of Princess Anne’s bridal gown – many will remember just how beautiful Princess Anne’s gown was.

The wedding dress became iconic and toured the world for a time, and then went on display at Althorp House her ancestral home. Prince Harry was gifted his mother’s wedding gown on the occasion of his 30th Birthday.

In 2018, the wedding dress was chosen as one of the “Most Influential British Royal Wedding Dresses of All Time” by Time magazine.

I would say yes, as are all gowns of the Royal Family. They have to have not only a design edge but also have to project a sense of magic. These wedding gowns have to be dramatic in every sense of the word and reflect the women who wear them. They are indeed works of art likely to be admired copied and examined over the years to come. The people who work on making these wedding gowns, the designers, the seamstresses, the embroider’s, the bead workers, not to mention the pattern cutters have to be not only the best in their trade but to also be intuitive enough to design wedding gowns that dreams are made of.
